What should I do if I feel like my dream career is too specific?

My goal is to become a counselor specifically for deaf and hard of hearing patients. I don't want to have to give up either aspect of the sign interpreting or the psychology but I'm not sure how to go about doing both. I'm already a senior in high school so I feel like my time is running out to pick one or magically find a way to do both

Hi Vivian,


I do not think your dream is too specific. Your main focus for this will be majoring in Psychology and you can also take sign language classes simultaneously. I believe you would be able to maintain all of these subjects in your normal class load. If your school does not offer the sign language course, there are several programs offered at nights and on weekends. I'd say keep pursuing your passion and dream, it can certainly be achieved! As a final suggestion, confide with your academic adviser on what you'd like to do and they can help mold a path for you.

Good evening, Vivian!

Your career goal is not too specific. Persons with disabilities need competent mental health practitioners and counselors. You will probably need to obtain at least a masters degree to actually provide counseling services. Apply to colleges/universities that offer coursework in sign language as well as psychology.


Your goal is a very noble one! Go for it!!!
