should I do a major and minor?

Specifically, next year I'm applying to NTID, Gallaudet, and Hunter College.
I'm thinking about doing a major and minor. So is it possible for me to do both?

Paul’s Answer

Yes, you can.  It all depends upon how they relate to each other. For example, when I was in college I majored in Economics and minored in Finance because when I selected electives I choose investment related courses since they were closely related to the study of Economics. . Therefore it made sense to choose Finance as a minor.

That being said, others choose minors because they have an interest in another area of study but it may not be related to their major so it all depends upon a person's individual preference. Keep in mind you don't have to declare a major or minor when applying to college so keep your options open.

Britta’s Answer

I actually pursued a double major and a minor in college. I majored in Economics and International Affairs, and minored in Geography. I wanted a double major, because both fields reflect my interests and I think the degrees complement each other and broaden my skill set. I received a minor, because a lot of the International Affairs courses I completed double counted for a Geography minor. In the end, I am very glad that I made these choices, as my current job relies on skills I obtained from both my Economics and International Affairs majors. I also think taking a variety of courses in different disciplines in college helps students to identify their interests (and disinterests) and which career paths to pursue.
