What is your advice for a sophomore in high school, who wants to go to a competitive college?

I am currently a sophomore in high school, and I plan to attend the Savannah College of Art and Design. I want to major in textiles and have a minor degree in fashion illustration to participate in runway fashion. Is there any advice on how to be more competitive so I can strive to getting into the school of my dreams? #art #arts #fashion #high-school

Hello, Faith J. -What an exciting plan for a creative and fun future !

The first thing that came to my mind after reading your question is : Build up a strong portfolio. Work on your designs every day. Having a very strong portfolio to show will give you a keen edge on other applicants.

Secondly, be involved with as many fashion shows as you can possibly find or create these events yourself. While in high school , talk with the people in charge of activities or shows and ask if you can do a fashion show , maybe for donations that will go back to your high school. If you already have these experiences with you before you attend college, you may have an advantage over other applicants. Take photos of the models wearing your designs.

Since design, fashion and style is your passion, you know that you can do it. Anything is possible and it will not help to try to predict what is at the end of the road. Enjoy the process and know that right now it's not about competition, it's all about being your most creative and appreciating your talent. This is also a time for you to develop your work ethics which will be very useful in the future. You indeed have something very special to contribute . Choose to associate with positive, upbeat people who recognize your skills and who maybe can even teach you additional ones, and appreciate you as a person. Don't let negative energy from others sway you or your motivation.

Best wishes to you with your journey in the design world !

Michelle recommends the following next steps:

Inquire at your high school about organizing fashion shows/presentations.
Design every day and build a strong portfolio of your best designs to show your college during the interview.
Take photos of models wearing your designs.
Network with supports and possible mentors.

Hey Faith,

First I suggest you to get in touch with someone in admissions, or look it up on like of what you need in order to get in. I'm sure the first think they look for are grades (GPA and test scores) afterwards it's all about extracurricular activities. Do tons of volunteer work, maybe host a fashion event at your school. You'll might need letters of recommendation. Work on some sketches now and continue to do so from now until you graduate and show your growth in your illustration skills(scan it and save on a flash drive), you could possibly add that in you packet when submit everything to get into the school. See if they have summer seminars for high school students.

In short try to reach out to the school and see what they're looking for and try to go above and beyond.
