Get your education first. If you want to make good long term money as a songwriter, learn an instrument and know music theory. You must know the language of music to communicate with other musicians for longevity. If you are trying to just write lyrics to a track, you are not guaranteed to have longevity.

This is a doubt in many youngsters' mind today. You have asked the right question. If successful both could lead to immense heights and hence pay well. But in the beginning, it might be easier to land a well paying job in computer science than as a song writer. But if you are passionate about song writing I would suggest you to pursue that continuously alongside a job in computer science for starters. You can also think about merging these two and coming up with apps that could use both of your skill sets.
Becoming a successful song writer might be testing since its a long road ahead. So with patience yes you could end up in a better position in the longer run but only with persistent effort. So again I would advice you to take up a computer science related job if money is the pressing issue and keep pursuing song writing alongside with patience. you will never know when the right time will pop up. I had to make the decision between the arts and the sciences when I was in High School as well. I wound up focusing my career in computer science and found that my artistic skills were very useful in this industry. I have been able to continue my art and music in my free time while using my career in computer science to keep myself financially stable. I highly recommend that you pursue a career path in technology since there will always be many job opportunities in this field. However, I want you to know that your career should never get in the way of your passion for songwriting.
