Painters can work in a few different type of fields. Commercial or Residential. I know some folks that have had successful businesses in both. Owning your own business is difficult but i feel would be the best bet for maximizing your income from the trade.

Hope this

Sheila’s Answer

Hi Brandi:

Thank you for your question. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median annual wage for painters, construction and maintenance was $38,940 in May 2018. The median wage is the wage at which half the workers in an occupation earned more than that amount and half earned less. The lowest 10 % earned less than $25,970, and the highest 10 % earned more than $64,790.

In May 2018, the median annual wages for painters, construction and maintenance in the top industries in which they worked were as follows:

  • Government = $55,520
  • Nonresidential building construction = $41,190
  • Residential building construction = $38,560
  • Painting and wall covering contractors = $37,870
