My name is Alysa Gurungin, i am from yap and i am 24 years old. I am a high school graduate and i want to continue my education and get a better job in the future.

Hi Alysa,
Business is such a large field. Are you interested in Marketing, Management, HR, Finance, Accounting, MIS, Supply Chain? Or are you interested in working for a large corporation? Depending on your interests, the area or field of study varies.
For me, I didn't know what I wanted to do at first. I went into Marketing because it seemed to combine my interests with a career that pays well, is always needed, and seemed fun. It actually aligned much more with my interests and skills than I had first assumed. Also, because I work for a large corporation, there are several different Marketing roles I can take and areas I can go into. I am able to learn a lot of different skills and keep challenging myself.
So for me, business - specifically marketing, was a great choice, but it really comes down to you and your interests. Take some time to look at different roles and job descriptions online for several companies that sound interesting to you. That will help you identify a career path and whether one of the business careers is good for you.

One of the big challenges of career in business is that you have to see or find out what is that you’re passionate about , and how does that passion translate to skill that you want to bring to a career in business. Businesses have many different type of roles. Roles that are based on interpersonal, analytical, technical, business or many variations thereof. The biggest challenge becomes is what skills you have and how you apply those in your role to exceed. You have to continuously learn and evolve and get better at what you do to make an impact as also the businesses continue to change and evolve.
What I best like about being in business is that you can bring multiple form of skills to make a difference or to move the business forward. It involves who you are , your personality and your skills to actually get the job done. And, being in business allows you to change and transform much easily than let’s say a doctor or an engineer would. In other words I love the career flexibility I have in business.
You can get many certifications including business degrees (both undergraduate or masters) you can even get a project or program management certificates for the roles that help a business move forward. Some of the other certificates can be around accounting, finance, marketing fundamentals and more. Looking up at the curriculum in your local city colleges can provide you with really good idea on certificates as well as certificate courses designed to help you with your career aspirations in business.

Challenges in a business career are the continual changes in technology and strategy. Markets and products are changing quicker than ever and you have to be very proactive to stay up to date with what's relevant. Every leader I have spoken with in the past several years has given my the same advice; never stop developing yourself, and always read more. Read books, news articles, blogs of industry leaders, anything to learn and grow more.
I like my career, specifically working in the telecommunications and technology industry, because we are on the front line of technology changes. I've been able to see the changes come from the ground up like LTE data service, Internet of Things products like shipment tracking with real time motion indicators or temperature monitors, and how people are at the forefront of changes happening.
I am currently finishing my Bachelor's degree to be able to advance my career, but will also be looking into Project Management Certification next, or possibly a nano-degree in another technology related field to continue my own personal development.
Keep Learning - about anything and everything! You never know where something you think is random can become applicable.
Talk to people you come in contact with, everyone can teach you something.

A career in "business" is 100% different for everyone. There are countless different companies and roles that you could consider. I would recommend starting by thinking critically about your strengths, weaknesses and areas of interest. For example, when I graduated from school I was a very good communicator and I could build relationships with anyone. I was not good at being detail oriented, documentation or timelines. I was passionate about people and learning.
I would have made a terrible accountant or analyst or any role that is very process oriented or did the same tasks over and over. I have had a lot of success in jobs that highlight my strengths and allow me to use my areas of interest by interacting with a lot of new people and regularly learning about new companies or products. Recruiting and Sales are some jobs I have really enjoyed doing in my career so far. By staying aware of my weaknesses, over time I have gotten exposure to new types of roles and have grown new skills. This has allowed my career to change and progress and given me a lot of opportunities to work for great companies in more strategic roles.
In any job some consistent challenges and fundamental skills you should develop are : building relationships, communication, influencing and leading others, organizational skills, time management.
I would also recommend focusing on "self leadership". This means to take accountability, be responsible, treat others with respect, continue to grow and learn. In being a good self leader, you will find that people come to respect you and opportunities will become available to you.
