Denise’s Answer

To become an actor, get involved with every possible aspect of the business. Find classes and clubs related to song, dance, physical art experience, writing and directing. Actors are curious and courageous. Great actors take direction well, learn quickly, and are open to criticism. As a producer, I coordinated live auditions with actors- some with years of experience, some beginners. Sometimes a beginner did a better job with the script than a seasoned professional did, because they were brave and inventive with the words on the paper.

Denise recommends the following next steps:

Talk to your peers about what classes they've taken, what was great (and not so great). Join or start a network and check in with them on a regular basis.
Find a local theater group and volunteer for any type of stagehand or director's assistant.
Teach yourself 5 favorite movie lines or scenes for doing impressions. Practice putting them together as a short audition 'schtick'.
Audition, audition, audition. A talent scout may see you a dozen times. If you are improving your skills and talent each time, someone will notice.
