What other career fields are open to someone who is looking for an international career besides foreign service?

I want to travel and help people, but also want a steady career. Looking into the foreign the United States foreign service, besides being a difficult field to get into can involve changing locations every four years and I'm not sure that's something I want. #international-affairs

Moira - there are many options in the US and overseas for someone interested in International Affairs in addition to the diplomatic services (the foreign service). Some people enjoy working with international humanitarian groups like International Rescue Committee (IRC) where the focus is serving vulnerable groups (rather than the political agenda of the US Government) or with the United Nations and its many areas of humanitarian and international administration responsibilities. There are also great options in the US with organizations like the Red Cross and, becaise you are in Georgia, The Carter Center, is globally recognized for their work in human rights, public health and international conflict resolution. Others enjoy working on the policy side for think tanks, for example, with options to work with non governmental organizations (NGOs) or with one of the federal agencies under the US Government. Finally, others like to apply international skills to working with large corporations developing projects in emerging markets. Enjoy exploring your many options!

There are many career options that are International, other than Foreign Service. You can teach overseas, work for international businesses. Because we live in the era of globalization, almost all businesses have some international trade. Speaking one or more other foreign languages is a huge asset.

Lucas recommends the following next steps:

Prepare for college; many of the positions will require a B.A. or B.S.
Study a foreign language, build fluency.
Get to know one or more countries where you think you might want to live and work.
