Many colleges offer scholarships based on all types of criteria, so start with the schools you are looking at for Grad school. Your best chances of earning a scholarship are locally, specifically at the school you are attending, and in your own community. Check with civic organizations, local business owners, etc.

There are lots of scholarships for minorities - with a simple Google search I found Asian American Women's Alliance Scholarship, the AANAPISI Scholarship , and more. CollegeScholarships.org also has Asian American scholarships - you can search by categories - see the links below. Also, there are some really good national searches out there - BigFuture is a free search on the CollegeBoard site (See below). You can search on any criteria such as state of residency, Grad vs. Undergrad, etc.

Scholly is another scholarship search engine. You can download the app and search based on different criteria you determine as well. Word of Caution: This is not a free search. Scholly does have a cost associated with it. I don't normally advocate for students paying money to find scholarships; however, I have personally worked with Scholly and found it helpful. I was using a sponsored version, so it didn't cost me anything at the time. I believe the cost is now $44.99 a year which I find to be quite high, so I'm not sure if this is a viable option for you.

In general, do not pay for scholarships. (Yes, I said there is a cost with Scholly, so this is your choice.) But beware of scammers who will tell you that you have won a scholarship (that you didnt' apply for) or that if you send them $xx they will release the money, etc. Be careful!

When looking for scholarships, think of your searches as a part-time job. Devote time to it every day. Most people have to apply for many, many scholarships before they receive one, so don't give up!

Disclaimer: These are examples of national searches. I am not promoting one scholarship search over any other and receive no compensation for recommending any site. I have used CollegeBoard and Scholly personally when working with students, but part of your search will include vetting any results to insure the organization/company/scholarship is legit.

Mary recommends the following next steps:

Go to the CollegeBoard site to search for scholarships on their BigFuture platform: https://bigfuture.collegeboard.org/scholarship-search
Download the Scholly app @ the App store for IoS or Android.
Search the app store for other free scholarship apps - there are many out there.

Jerel’s Answer

Hi Chan,

Some scholarships for college are merit-based. You earn them by meeting or exceeding certain standards set by the scholarship-giver. Merit scholarships might be awarded based on academic achievement or on a combination of academics and a special talent, trait, or interest. Other scholarships are based on financial need. You can learn about scholarships in several ways, including contacting the financial aid office at the school you plan to attend and checking information in a public library or online.

Sheena Daree’s Answer

Mary's provided some excellent resources and tips. I'd just like to add the below:

Check out APIA Scholars. They're the biggest non-profit provider of college scholarships to Asian and Pacific Islander Americans. https://portal.apiasf.org

Don't miss the Asian Pacific Fund. https://asianpacificfund.org/what-we-do/scholarships/apply-for-scholarship/

Broaden your search so that you can find funds that speak to other parts of your identity, interest and field of study.

This scholarship finder tool lets you sort thousands and thousands of awards by deadline, affiliation/background, gender, geographical area: https://www.careeronestop.org/toolkit/training/find-scholarships.aspx

Good luck!

Sheena Daree recommends the following next steps:

Get feedback on your essays. Tell everyone you're applying for awards, so that they are more likely to share opportunities with you when they hear about them.
Keep in mind that a scholarship is an investment; make sure your essay highlights why the funding organization should invest in you (a useful way to approach this is to think about the contributions you hope to make and how this education will enable you to do so. Let your essay show the greater impact and how your education and work will benefit others. For example, it may be that you'll go on to be a teacher in an under-resourced school, or that you want to go into public health to serve certain populations, or be a role model for people in your community.)
Scholarship award amounts really vary. You may be tempted to focus on applying on the $5k and $10k awards, since they require the same amount of work as $500 awards--but keep in mind that the smaller awards might not have as many applicants so you may have better odds.
Use unigo.com to search for awards related to various parts of your identity, interests and background
