I think it depends on what your route is. A lot people I know who want to be psychologists went to college for 4 years and studied psychology and then went to grad school to get a masters which usually takes 4 years. Overall, like most doctors it will take close to 10 years to become a doctor if you are gradually consistent in your schooling.

There are many branches of psychology.

I've known people who spend 2 years studying social work, and then open up their own practices as mental health professionals.

School psychologists only need to go to school for about 3 years, but then you can only practice in a school.

There are some masters programs that allow you to practice specific types of psychology, but terminal psychology masters programs tend to feed into doctoral programs.

In TX it requires a Bachelor, Masters, and PHD or PsyD degree and so that will likely take 8-10 years.
