In order to become a Registered Nurse (RN) you must have a nursing degree and you must pass the NCLEX licensing exam. There are three degree options for students who want to become an RN:

1) Associates Degree in Nursing - 2-year community college degree
2) Bachelor of Science in Nursing - 4-year university degree
3) Direct-entry or Graduate-entry Masters of Science in Nursing - about 2 years of graduate school after completing a 4-year Bachelors degree in something other than nursing

Usually, the higher the degree, the higher the income and the more potential for leadership and professional advancement within the healthcare system.

Hi Kathryn,

If you decide to study to become a Registered Nurse (RN) you need to first graduate with a Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree that is required for RN’s to obtain after attending Nursing school. Once you graduate with your BSN you need to pass the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-RN) exam to obtain your license to practice or work as an RN. Once you pass your NCLEX exam you are ready to work as an RN at any part of the Healthcare system in the United States such as an Emergency room nurse caring for patients who are brought by ambulance. If you decide to go higher than an RN and become a Nurse Practitioner (NP) who is able to write medication prescriptions for patients similar to a doctor you will have to study to graduate a masters or doctorate in nursing after graduating with a BSN.
