Hi Jersey!

A day in life for every designer is a bit different depending on the company they are in, the type of project they work on, and the different processes the team works by.

I'd say sometimes you start off with a bunch of meetings, getting to know your requirements and understanding the problems through white-boarding sessions. Depending on the Engineer team you are working with you may have daily stand ups or checkins to see progress. Usually all the meetings happen during the morning until early afternoon. After all that you get a few hours to yourself to finally do some design work (user flows, sketches, mockups).

Hi Jersey

I'm a UX designer in the gaming industry. I work for a major mobile gaming company based out of California - San Francisco to be exact.

A majority of my day consists of playing games (for research HUGE PERK) on mobile, console, pc, tablet, you name it! I spend alot of my time collaborating with different disciplines of the game industry, notably game designers, engineers, and product managers. UX designers don’t just focus on creating products that are usable; we concentrate on other aspects of the user experience, such as pleasure, efficiency and fun, too.

Hey Jersey,

It's so awesome that you're interested in becoming a UX designer. Here's a little bit about my day-to-day:

- A day on the job for me involves working with different people on my team to understand the problem we're trying to solve. Teamwork is an essential part of working as a designer. I love getting to work with all different types of people, including developers and product managers. Together, we figure out what our user interface needs to be able to do.

- A UX designer has several hands-on areas of expertise they use throughout the day. Of course, I spend some time designing mockups and interactive prototypes based on the problems the team and I decide to address. I use various graphic design tools and prototyping software to help simulate the interface I am helping design.

- Another hands-on area is conducting usability research. As a designer, I gather insights from the people who use my product, and those insights help me craft the design. Think of this as similar to the scientific method you learn about in school. You create a hypothesis about what will work well for users, and then you create an experimental design mockup/prototype to show users. Whether or not the users can easily use and understand what you designed will support or not support your hypothesis.

- Communication is also a key part of being a designer. Every day, I present my designs and user insights to the team of business people or developers. I have to effectively communicate what I learned from the user research and how that impacted my design decisions.

I love this career because I get to make things easier for people to use. It is fun and creative.

Hi Jersey,

I have been a UX Designer for about 4 years now. My typical day consists of collaborating with multiple other professionals such as product owners, architects, web developers, and other designers through in-person or remote meetings. A good majority of my time during the day is spent on creating designs for desktop and mobile applications. I get to use many design tools depending on what I need to build. Tools I use most include Sketch or Figma for the application designs and occasionally Adobe PhotoShop or Illustrator for things like icons or graphics I might need.

I also do a lot of research regarding web design best practices, accessibility for users with visual impairments, and learning disabilities. But the most important aspect of my position comes on the days spent gathering information from or about users of the apps that I help to design. As a UX Designer, it is my job to be the voice of the user. So, many days are spent talking to people who will be using the app, testing the app with those users, and iterating on designs based on user feedback.

Overall it's a very enjoyable and rewarding career because I get to design solutions to problems that help people.
