Hi, I work as a hotel concierge and would like advice on change of career using my same skill set. Thank you

I have been working for about 15 years as a 5 star Hotel concierge and really want to come out of hospitality industry and wondering where I could move to using my skill set. I have been pondering over few things but seem lost as to what I can do. Would really be grateful to receive advice, thank you #concierge #hospitality

Consider what industry truly sparks your interest and let that guide your path. As a successful concierge you are likely to be good at building a network of people and making connections, communicating, problem solving, working under pressure, being professional, dealing with people, and generally organized which are all very transferable skills across a lot of roles and industries. I am a personal assistant/executive assistant and these are the main skills needed in my role. These skills would also relate to events manager or client account manager type roles, again across all different industries. There are a lot of directions you could go in. Think about the skills that you've built as being a concierge and use that as a foundation for figuring our your next move. You've interacted with the public, problem solved, dressed professionally, worked on the telephone and provided customer service. A couple of fields that this might apply to would be sales (either retail or business to business) and a customer service rep. Good luck!

I agree on what the others have said about doing customer service related jobs. I would also say that you might want to consider doing hotel management. I would imagine that you have a network of people in the hotel industry who would be able to speak as references. You could become a manager at a four star hotel and try to move into a different industry based on the managerial title and role. You would have to probably focus down which industry you'd want to switch to and try to make connections into that industry for networking purposes.

There are plenty of opportunities out there where you can utilize your experience and skillset! However the main thing is that you will have to ask yourself: what do I like to do? If I leave hospitality industry, what are the other industries I would be interested in getting into? You could easily switch to fields such as Wellness, Real Estate Management, Consulting and even financial services, but find out what would you be enjoy doing is the first step.

I would recommend researching industries that are highly dependent on customer service levels. Hotel concierges are the best at providing service! Moreover, many industries have a "customer service" department, even if they are in manufacturing, for example. Another option you might consider, is taking advantage of your language skills, which might give you a competitive edge in the market. Good luck!

I echo Karin, Alan, Simeon, and Mingyi's responses. If you're looking into making a career move, the next best thing you can do for yourself is to follow your passion and your heart. What's kept you working in Concierge for 15 years that you've enjoyed? Is it helping people? Is it interacting with different types of people? Is it being in an environment where people are traveling, whether that be for leisure or business? Is it being able to share your knowledge & resources with others? Also, what haven't you enjoyed during your 15 years experience that you really wouldn't want to repeat elsewhere? Is it a stressful job? The type of hours and days you work, etc.? Hopefully answering these questions will begin to narrow down your options as to where you may wish to work next!

I also agree with what Karin, Alan, Simeon, and Mingyi have already shared in that your Concierge experience is a blessing! Many of the skill sets required of a successful Concierge provide you a foundation that is transferable to several other industries. You work well with others, are likely a strong communicator, very resourceful, able to think outside of the box, perform well under pressure, act with professionalism. As you edit your resume and prepare to apply for your next job opportunity, think about all the experiences, knowledge, and skill sets you have and how those would apply to different jobs and industries.
