Hi Justin,

There are many different ways to make a portfolio from a technical standpoint. I made mine in Illustrator, although I'm sure many people use InDesign or other programs. I'm just most comfortable working in Illustrator.
Depending on the type of graphic design you are looking to do (there are many!), you will feature no more than 10-12 pieces of your best work. If you are looking to apply for work doing different types of graphic design, or working for different types of companies (ex: an ad agency vs an in-house marketing team for a corporation), you will make several different portfolios, one for each category.

Adriana’s Answer

Hi Justin,

Your graphic design portfolio will be the tool you will be primarily using to sell yourself once you are out in the professional world. I recommend showcasing a variety of projects from print to web. In doing so, you will be able to demonstrate an array of talent.
Also, it is important to keep in mind that if you choose to solely showcase one expertise, for example logo design, then only expect to be hired for logo design jobs/careers. There is no wrong in doing so, but it is important to keep in mind. The key after graduating and stepping into the professional world is to experiment and experience different careers to see which best fits you.

It is also vital to create a digital online portfolio that shows all your work and a printed portfolio with alike projects to bring with you during interviews and portfolio reviews.

Best of luck!

Cuong’s Answer

There are two kinds of portfolio for a graphic designer.

Print and Digital.

It's good to have a booklet or folder that contains of the work you have design in one.

And the other is a website.

If you know code, you can create your website out of scratch, on your own with HTML and CSS.

If you don't know code, there are many alternatives for creative types who can't code. There are websites that can help you create the website by paying them or there's the new adobe program called, "Adobe Muse" which is easier than Adobe Dreamweaver because you need to understand code on Dreamweaver.
