What made you interested in business management?

I'm in middle school and taking a career class. After I took a survey, business management was one of the suggested paths I got. I would like see if I would be interested in business management. #career #business

HI Mira
I have been in the business management side for more than 10 years now and i really love it. What i enjoy is that there is always a lot of change in the kind of projects that you have to work on and you can learn about a lot of areas from sales, marketing to finance. You get to meet people in all areas and learn along with them. I hope you consider a career in business management in the future.
You can do some business specific courses in high school and see how you like them. If you enjoy solving problems and talking with people, you will enjoy being on the business side. Good luck, study well and work hard and it will open a lot of doors for you

Hi Mira, one of the ways you can find out if you would actually enjoy a management role is to take one on right now! You could become president or vice president of a club or activity at school. That way you could learn how to manage other people and be a leader and it would let you see what it's like to be a manager in business.

Hi Mira! Kudos to you as a middle school student already looking at careers! I cant say that most middle students are even looking into jobs right now. You are on the right path!
I have been in the business field 30+ years and have enjoyed all my careers. From retail to corporate america, you are always meeting exciting people and learning new concepts. Its a constant changing field! You mentioned you took a survey and it pointed you to Business management. I was interested in getting a business management degree because its subject matter focused on bringing out the best in people and teams, making solid business plans and analytics, and responding to the needs of the customer. There were a variety of skills and the best managers looked out for the needs and interests of those both inside and outside of the customer. That being said, I was fairly naive about what would be expected from a manager, but the knowledge I gained in management courses was still quite valuable towards those goals in the job and non-profit work I've done since graduating.

I hope that you liked this Business Class. Business is a fun vocation with a broad array of different roles that you can get into over your career. There's Marketing, Sales, Procurement, Retail, Wholesale, Finance and many more to choose from. Best to speak to a mentor who will answer your question about the type of business you would like to work for. It could be Convenience Stores (like 7 Eleven or Circle K), or The Limited Express (in the mall), or an AT&T Wireless Stores, Apple, Best Buy, Target and the list goes on and on. Try to speak to the store manager in a retail environment, and who know this person may help you get a job while you are finishing school and working on a degree. The mentor could also be in Supply Chain or Procurement and this person may work in Oil/Gas, Utility, Finance, Healthcare, or Eyeglasses and much more. Suggest a Google type search online to get an idea about the tasks involved in the day to day role of your interest.

I've been working in the corporate work for 20+ years and the best part is the variation you can find in different companies. Because business management is a broad topic, you can take what you learn to many different companies and different divisions within that company. By starting with a entry level position, you learn everything you can and network with others. By exposing yourself to diverse opportunities, you start to learn what you like or dislike. For those items you like, you can find mentors that will help you learn and grow. While I've only worked for three companies in those 20+ years, I've had 12+ different roles. Each role different, where you learn something new, and yet you bring what you already knew and experienced to the new roles. The best part that I've found in my career is that change happens and if you embrace that, jobs will vary and you'll find continuous excitement in that newness. For the most part, the people you meet and work with are great too. Also, the skills you learn in business management and the corporate world allow you a glimpse into various responsibilities and for some, that helped them go out on their own to start their own business as an entrepreneur.
