Switching professions?

Hi, my dream as a child was to become a famous singer, and I'm also very known to have a beautiful voice etc. but my father was telling me that it wouldn't be a stable career as a start off and I should choose a career that would, like a doctor. And after I finish med school, I can go off and start my singing career knowing that I'm still licensed from being a doctor, and also making money from it while I'm a singer. But question is, I don't know how that would turn out. Should I (1) during med school, I sing in local gigs WHILEim studying in med school? Or (2) after I graduate med school I start the singing career? Even though I might be a little old for that. So I really don't know. PLZZ HELP. #and #doctors #musicians

Thank you comment icon I think you should do what you really want to do. Singing while in med school can be pretty hard especially with all the classes and study you have to do. But singing after med school is kind of okay, but it's kind of hard to find a singing career right after med school. I suggest that since you have two options in your life, why not just choose the one that you like the best? I'm sorry if my advice is bad, bc I am only a sophmore in high school and is also planning to go to med school. Maggie

It's great to have something that you are passionate about! It's also wonderful that you have the grades and talent to get into Medical School! What is interesting about the paths in front of you is that both are vocations. I believe the best doctors have a passion for medicine and a passion for helping people. Medical School is a grind and I think it will be hard for you to do much outside of your studies to pursue a separate career. However, you could try to combine your two interests. How about organizing something musical for the children's hospital associated with your medical school? You could organize an event where you (and others) sang and played music for the patients. You could also encourage the kids to join in. - Karaoke night at the hospital? After your first year of Medical School you will have a better idea if a career in medicine is a viable option for you. I have visited Nashville several times. There is so much great singing talent in Nashville that just about anywhere you go you can find live music. Many of the singers are singing for the pleasure of being able to do it - of course with the hope of being discovered. They do other things to support themselves. Give yourself time to figure out what you really want to do - keep your options open. Its a big world out there and anything is possible!
