- What's the best way to start:
The first step is to have a monster machine (Gaming PC preferred)
Install a professional editing software like Final Cut, Adobe Premiere, Davinci Resolve, Avid Media Composer etc.

- How should I practice:
Watch tutorials via youtube or buy a course online like udemy.com to teach you from basic editing and technical(video formats, dimensions, frame rates, etc). After you learn some stuff try to make your own by taking videos, and photos and then edit them by yourself.

- How important is learning sound editing:
Well, bad audio is a major turn-off for the viewers. There were bad video materials but if you have clear audio and good timing with your background music makes a viewer admire your work. So you better have a background in sound editings like removing hiss and background noise.

- What are good skills to have:
There's Animation, motion graphics and the most important is storytelling. In my opinion, to master the skills you need to have a lot of experience so you have to sacrifice other fields in Video editing, For example: if you master motion graphics and animation you will sacrifice story-telling. That's why you can see it in the end credits of a movie, there were video editors and motion graphics is another team and so with the visual effects.

-What tools are most beneficial:
If you go for the film industry, practice AVID Media Composer, Final Cut
You should not forget to learn about after effects.
Any software is beneficial as long as it meets your satisfaction.
Don't get stuck in your skill. Change is always hard at the start, just keep asking and do some research. All you need is on the internet.

You can start with your cell phone. Recording video what you like, then upload them to the iMovie. iMovie is a very easy apps to edit video. When you familiar with iMovie, then you use more advanced Adobe Premiere Pro and Final Cut to edit video.
