Where do you go if you want to be a garbage man

I've been thinking of being a garbage man but I don't know where to go so I can get hired in nyc.

My husband has been a garbageman in Ohio for over 40 years. I would begin by calling a local hauler and ask them questions. I would ask if you need a CDL license to drive. I would ask how many hours you would need to work. Do they have a union? Benefits? Retirement plan?

If you want to get into sales or management ask about the training you would need for such a position? Can you move up the ladder if you desire to?

Some companies offer ways to move to other cities, some don't.

Hi Felix!

In order to be a garbage man you will likely need a high school degree to apply for the job. Being a garbage man is a big team effort so any experience you can get working in a team will help boost your resume and make you more qualified for the job when you go to apply for it. You could consider working for a moving company as well that will 1. increase your physical strength that's required for the job and 2. give you experience collaborating with others.

In order to operate a garbage truck you also will need to get a commercial driver's license. Having this license is not required but will help you stand out from other applicants applying to the job.

Hi Felix, There are many ways to get into the waste and recycling industry. I would start by finding a local waste and recycling hauler and look for any ride-along opportunities. A ride-along is the perfect way to get a feel for the industry as a driver and see some of the challenges drivers are faced with daily. Another option would be finding a landfill or a recycling plant nearby and trying to get a tour. Touring facilities is a great way to learn and better understand what happens to your waste and recycling post-consumer. Starting here would be a great way to get your foot in the door to the waste and recycling industry!
