Courtney’s Answer

Christopher, you have the specifics in the other answers. I would just add my usual: make sure you stay rounded along the journey. If you haven't done so already, start appreciating a work life balance while you forge ahead.
Try to associate yourself with folks on the same path as you are who can give you some feedback as to what to look forward to from a practical standpoint.
I would also set up checkpoints along the way, starting with making the choice that you really want to do this. These checkpoints are when you re-evaluate where you are and where you are going.

Best of luck.

Paul’s Answer

First step is to obtain a 4 year college (bachelors) degree.

Next step, (and arguably one of the most difficult!) is to apply and get accepted to medical school. This includes taking the required classes in college (examples include math, biology, chemistry, physics, etc) and taking the medical college admissions test (MCAT).

During the beginning of the last year in medical school (which is 4 years) you will apply to residency. Residency is a training period in which you focus your training and learning on a particular specialty in medicine. In this case, is will be anesthesiology. Residency can be as short as three years, or as long as 7 to 8 years. A residency in anesthesiology is a total of 4 years.

Once you have completed a 4 year residency in anesthesiology, you are now an anesthesiologist.

In summary:
4 years of college
4 years of medical school
4 years of residency.

Best of luck! Hope this helped.
