Architecture as a Career Option?

What does a architect do in a day? Do your art skills have to be good? How strong do your interpersonal skills need to be? Is the job stressful, and if so why?

Why are you interested in architecture in the first place? Ask yourself that! Is there a certain building you are in love with? Does the idea of creating a distinctive building style excite you? I would suggest finding a couple of local architects and ASK them. They could certainly tell you what they do all day! And they could tell you what the most exciting (and conversely, what is most boring) aspect of this profession.

Hi Jessie,

I've wondered about this question myself since my son is gravitating towards pursuing architecture as his chosen profession. Upon doing more research on Google, I discovered that there are several career paths in architecture and I think the responsibilities of the profession are similar across these paths. The core tenets of architecture involve working on the design, interfacing with clients, contractors and city building depts on the design and verifying the construction meets the designs. Typically, this could be a lengthy cycle from a few months to over a year on one project which may require more interaction at the beginning and latter stages of the project. The job could become stressful if the construction doesn't match the design documents, etc. These days architects use computer aided software, so I don't believe your artwork drawn by hand is necessary, but it's good to have art skills in this area as a foundation when you switch over to using a computer to draw your designs.
