Dan’s Answer

A bachelor's degree can take four or more years(depending on the program and school) as a full time student, That is just a first step to becoming a Psychologist. To become a licensed Psychologist, you will need to acquire a masters degree in psychology followed by your doctoral degree in psychology. There are many areas of psychology in which you can work. Lets say you would like to work as a School Psychologist, you could get licensed to work in a primary or secondary school with just a masters degree. The demand for School Psychologists(depending on the State) is very high and offers a great schedule conducive to family life. Also, you will need to perform exceptionally well as a student, pursuing your bachelor degree, if you intend to apply to graduate school for your masters/doctorate. Most graduate schools accept only a small/ limited number of undergrads into their psychology programs. As you pursue your bachelor's degree, you will need to attain excellent grades, straight A's if at all possible and be as involved as you can in leadership roles in extra-curricular activities. I remember when I graduated from my undergrad program , I applied to the University of New Hampshire graduate psychology program and learned that they were only accepting 12 students into their program that year. Once you receive your Doctorate you will apply to become licensed(which will include testing) which will vary from state to state. Job prospects are very favorable for Psychologists. Once you have your doctorate and become licensed, you will then be in a position to start your own practice independently or with a group. All the best to you as you pursue your life calling.

The first answer given was very good advice - I would like to add a different element for you to consider as well. I have been in the Human Resources profession for over 20+ years and knowing about 'people' from a psychology perspective is vitally important! In HR, we are the individuals in a company that ensures that people are treated fairly and that everyone is seen as unique. Understanding our human psychology and learning about why we do the things we do and why we respond in certain ways makes our 'people' job so much easier and rewarding! We help managers think in a different way about their employee who may not appear motivated or connected - then we work on different ways to support that individual to be successful at work! Good Luck!

Blanche’s Answer

Analba, your question doesn't have a simple answer. A bachelor's degree in psychology usually takes 4 years, but how much additional education you'll need depends upon the type of business you want to start. Perhaps you're thinking of a psychotherapy business (or "practice"), or maybe you hope to apply your knowledge of psychology in some other way. So you'll need to start by narrowing down exactly what you want to do in business and then find out what the educational requirements are. Here are some examples:
- If you want to become a clinical/counseling psychologist in private practice in almost any of the US states, you must complete a doctoral degree, which usually takes 5-7 years after the bachelor's degree. Then you'll need a year or more of supervised post-doctoral practice before you'll qualify to take the licensing exam in your state. Once you pass all portions of the exam and receive a license, you will be eligible to set up your own practice.
- If you want to become a psychotherapist who is not a clinical/counseling psychologist, you can become a licensed clinical social worker or mental health counselor, either of which requires a master's degree, usually earned in 2 years after the bachelor's degree. Then you can take a licensing exam and become licensed to practice independently.
- If you intend your business to have some other focus, you'll need to clarify what that is and then do some research about what is needed to reach your goal.
Best wishes!

Martina’s Answer

Depends on what you want top do with psychology - degree takes 3-4 years depending on the country. But psychology is very versatile. You can work as a researcher or even work in marketing, advertising and UX.
To be a therapist, there may be additional degrees and certifications you will have to attain.

Victoria’s Answer

This answer will differ from person to person, however, on average, it would take someone about 4 years to earn their BA (bachelor's degree) in Psychology. From there, you will have a multitude of options to choose from. There is an abundance of job availability with just your BA in Psychology; there is an even greater post secondary education opportunity for you as well (MA/PhD).

In terms of further education, you can earn a Master's degree in virtually anything as psychology is a very versatile area of study that can be translated across different occupational areas. However, if you are interested in becoming a therapist/psychologist, you may be required to go through further schooling and earn your PhD (as this is a licensure requirement in a handful of states).

Starting your own business: You are able to start your own business in any field you choose. This will require a great deal of time, money, energy, and networking. I highly encourage you to do some research and try to hone in on exactly what it is you are interested in as the world of psychology and the world of business is quite vast.
