What are good colleges for Actuarial Science that are not too competitive?

I'm planning on majoring in actuarial science and I was wondering if there are any colleges that are not too competitive. I've looked into Texas A&M and I was wondering if anyone has any insight on taking actuarial science there?

You are choosing a very exciting and challenging major. A math/actuarial double major may be something for to to consider as well, Are you wanting to attend a school in Texas or the southwest area ? There are a lot of school options if you are open to a larger geographical area. One thing you might consider is perhaps attending a smaller school in a medium to large metropolitan area. This will afford you smaller classes(to establish good relations with your professors, who in all likelihood, would have strong connections with those working in the actuarial sciences), and would afford you some great opportunities for internships. This will not only help you more clearly decide the career direction you want to pursue that best suits you interest and motivation. My son in law is attending a small school, Otterbein College in Ohio, (majoring in actuarial/math) and he has had some great internship opportunities and has been able to connect with key people in the industry. It has also helped him to hone down the specific career area in actuarial that is the best fit for him. All the best in your endeavors

I know many of my friends who did Actuarial Science at Texas A&M and it seemed to work very well for them. UW Platteville and Drake are other options.

Another option is to major in mathematics at a college that also offers some courses related to actuarial science. There are two advantages to this approach (1) you don't specialize too early in your career (consider that you may not like actuarial science once you get further exposer to the topic) and (2) you will have more colleges to select from if you only require that they offer a math major and some actuarial science courses.

Lots of Big Ten schools have great actuarial science programs and great campus cultures. Outside of the Big Ten, I would recommend looking at Drake, Florida State, and UCONN. Many schools may not have competitive general admissions process but have top ranked actuarial science programs!

If you go on the SOA (Society of Actuaries) site, you can search for Centers of Actuarial Excellence, which are the top recommended actuarial science schools. Best of luck to you!
