How is this app going to help me?

Can this program help me find careers that interest me or is it just to help me stay organized? I'm stuck on what I want to do with my life and I just don't know the purpoe of this site.

McKenzie, this site is intended to be a resource for students and young professionals to seek advice from seasoned professionals regarding education choices and career path options. I have noticed that detailed questions on this site receive the better responses from the volunteer professionals herein. You mention that you are stuck on what you want to do with your life. It might be a good idea to ask a question on this site about how you can decide on education and career paths. By revealing a little about some of your passions, talents, and education and social strengths and weaknesses, I am sure that there are many volunteers on this site that can provide some guidance that you need. The truth is you, and you alone, need to figure out your purpose. Your dreams. Your passion. No one anywhere can tell you that. You need to spend some time thinking and maybe trying some things. When I was 13 years old I "found" organization. I LOVE organization. I could spend my entire day organizing and never get bored of it. I forget to eat and don't watch the clock while I am organizing. Because I love it so much. Bringing order to chaos gives me such pleasure and a sense of productivity. I sleep soundly after thoroughly organizing something. What do you love? It would be something you could never get bored of learning about. I have more books on organizing than any other non fiction category. I jump out of bed in the morning when I know I am going to be organizing that day. What is your passion? What do you think about all the time?
You may not know what this is yet, but thinking about what calls you and what you really enjoy doing will eventually lead you there.
Time spent learning about you is never wasted time. Learn who you are. What makes you, you.

You have been given some excellent insights. I will add another thought for consideration. To help you define the best options for your career choices, you may want to start by understanding your natural strengths and identifying careers that value those strengths. There are a number of assessments that can help you define your natural strengths. My favorite is StrengthsFinder which will share your strengths and what they mean to career choices and working styles. But, I encourage you to do your own research to define the one that best suits you and take the assessment. The results for me were very revealing and helpful in navigating my career. And I hope they are for you as well.

Hi McKenzie,

This site is about filling the gap between students (like you) and professionals (like me/us). This site then becomes almost what you as student want it to become.
For the past year I've been contributing to this site, many other students came with the same question about choosing a career path. It's hard, especially considering the vast amount of potential careers, schools and so on.
We, as professionals, are here to help you make what is ultimately your choice to make by giving you advices (as adults) and describing what a day-to-day in a given profession looks like so you can make an educated choice.
For students that are still unsure what a good career is for them, I usually start with these questions:
- what do you like doing all day long?
- what topics are you good at?
- what can you do under constraints / obligations?

The third bullet is important: your passions are one thing, but usually it means that you do them when you feel like so, your way. Working for a company does not necessarily give you that luxury and more often than we wish, we are forced to do something or do it a way we do not necessarily agree with. This is part of the job.

If you are able to come up with something that matches the three, you have a win!
Then you can use this site again to ask more precise questions about what you have figured out, discuss with your parents and councilor at school to find out the next step.

Good question. Many questions I see here are difficult to answer because this forum has limited service. No, we cannot help you find your career. Instead, we can respond with information on specific careers that interest you, or on the steps to take to consider some careers. Good luck in your pursuits. I suggest using this forum as one of many sources to pursue, but the only one.

Hello - I think it's helpful discussing your options and interests you have with getting answers from people that are actually on a certain career path and are able to give you, their experience as well as education needed for certain jobs.
Also searching and reading other people's questions and answers may give you the answer you are looking for.
