How do I figure out what I want to be when I’m older based off of what I like to do?

I know I like to make people happy, I like getting what I want and I’m pretty good at it (not in a bratty way), I like helping people, and I like accomplishing things. I just don’t know what career these things turn out to be.

Hi, Brynn!

It's great that you know what you enjoy doing and where your strengths are. I would suggest taking a few career aptitude tests online to give you an idea of career options that align with your skills and interests. If your school has a guidance or career counselor, I'd also suggests speaking with them about potential career options.

After you've got your list of jobs, you should start looking into what they require, how much they make, and how much of a need is projected for them in the future. Which ones fit within your financial, mental, and emotional wants and needs? Which ones fit within your budget and schedule in terms of education requirements? Try reaching out the people with those jobs to get more of an idea of their day to day to see how appealing it is to you in terms of pay, responsibilities, work place culture, work-life balance, etc

Take the time to write down what are your core values , do a list of 15 and then select 5 that you can not part with. This exercise will help you understand the why ( What motivates you ) to pursue a particular career path.

Keep doing what you like to do - but research fields that can have you do what you like - if you like to research - legal research, and if you like to write - all the better. Writing - advertising.....math - actuarial or accounting - you get my point!

I would recommend doing part time work in an industry of interest to you to get experience. If you are already available to be in the work place, perhaps also trying temp jobs in a field you think you may enjoy. The exposure to the industry may help you determine the following: 1, what size of organization you enjoy working in (large or small/start-up), 2, what kind of company culture is a good fit for you of 3, what role / position brings you the most satisfaction 4, is the compensation appropriate for your lifestyle, 5, be patient as your career choices may change over time and what you think you like today, may not be what you like in 5 or 10 years time. For some people, the career they end up spending most of their time in was not what they initially thought they would have been doing when they left college/university. Sometime, you take a role and you discover you like it & before you know it, you are successfully in that role for a decade or two and then you look back and ask yourself "how did I get here" when it's totally not what I was planning when I was at university?

Try taking a personality assessment like the Myers-Briggs personality test. It will calculate your personality traits based on your answers and give you a list of what careers you possibly can be good at. This does not mean that you have to go into these careers, however its more of a suggestion.
