I’m interested in architecture. What courses should I take that will help me. ##highschool

Thank you comment icon Hi James. Great question! Architects must have a strong grasp of mathematical concepts in order to make sturdy buildings so I would recommend mastering algebra, calculus, geometry, and trigonometry, etc. I think you should also take physics classes because you definitely need to be familiar with the laws of physics to balance your architecture. In addition of course, I would suggest taking art classes so you learn to sketch out onto blueprints what you envision in your mind. Keep in mind though that all your core classes are important and required in order to become an architect. I hope this helps and I wish you the best! Mireia

I would first ask why you are interested in architecture? Are there certain things like creativity, or construction, or drawing that are leading you in that direction? Based on your answer, I would look into courses that focus in those areas. To be an architect, one first has to be passionate about it, not caring how much effort is required, only that it's something that brings them joy. Start with the thing that makes architecture joyful for you. Because that's something school can't teach you, but something you can take with you throughout your career.

Look into local community college courses. If any peak your interest see if you can attend and get credit. These courses are typically more flexible and will allow you to explore different aspects of architecture that you can't get in high school.

The Humanities courses will sharpen your communication skills. Presentation of a project is an important business aspect. Math and science courses help develop problem-solving techniques and logic. Specifically studying physics will get you familiar with important concepts related to force, such as compression and tension. And of course Art courses like drawing, painting, sculpture, and photography — will be helpful in developing your ability to visualize and conceptualize, which are both important skills to an architect.

Previous answers are correct in that math, physics, and art courses would be helpful, but I'd also recommend world history! Architecture is a really important part of culture, and the history of architecture around the world is really rich. Even if it's not touched upon in your specific course, consider watching a Netflix show like Top 10 Architecture to supplement your education!
