Hello, Tasmina !

It is really awesome that you are writing a research paper on a topic that is close to your interest. You are asking whether or not you could write the paper and attach it to your account on Common App. My advice is that if the site allows you to upload a large research paper and that's what you'd like to do to store it there, I don't see that it would be a problem. Keep in mind that new editions of Common App come out each year on August 1st and you should read all of the directions about uploading.

What I am sure about is that you should type it on a word processing program and store it in a file on your computer. You can even print it and keep it in an offline file.

Although Common App has essay prompts, I am not sure if any colleges that you will apply to through Common App require a research paper. You're free to use their entire website, but my advice would be to just save it in a file or drive and print the paper for an offline copy. When you do the Common App, you'll want to follow directions exactly, not leaving anything blank or adding anything that is not asked for. Unless things have greatly changed, I am almost positive that college admissions are not asking for research papers. You can always show or send your research paper to anyone who is asking for projects that you've worked on or use it for a course you take that may require a term paper. The experience of research can also go on your resume. You could possibly write about your experience doing the research on the essay depending on the question for the essay.

Remember, too, that Common App offers resources about Financial Aid and Scholarships. Also, you can get the fee waived from what your school may charge you by indicating a financial need on the Common App. So the app is definitely worthwhile, especially when it comes to applying to colleges, but it really may not be necessary to store your research paper there - just keep it in a file on your computer/device.

I hope this is helpful and I wish you all the best moving forward with your research !

Hello Tasmina,

Can I put research papers on my common app?

When it comes to including research papers on your Common Application (Common App) for college admissions, it is possible to do so, but there are some important considerations to keep in mind. The Common App provides students with the opportunity to showcase their academic achievements, extracurricular activities, and personal interests. Here is a detailed breakdown of whether you can include research papers on your Common App:

1. Additional Information Section: The Common App includes an “Additional Information” section where you can provide any relevant details that you believe will enhance your application. This section allows you to upload supplementary materials such as research papers, articles, or projects that you have worked on.

2. Relevance and Impact: Before deciding to include a research paper in your application, consider the relevance and impact of the paper on your overall profile. Admissions officers are interested in seeing how you have pursued your academic interests and how these experiences have shaped your goals and aspirations.

3. Length and Format: If you choose to include a research paper, it is essential to ensure that it aligns with the guidelines provided by the Common App. Make sure the paper is concise, well-written, and highlights your research skills and intellectual curiosity.

4. Abstract or Summary: Instead of attaching the full research paper, you may opt to include an abstract or summary that provides a brief overview of the study, methodology used, key findings, and conclusions. This approach allows admissions officers to grasp the essence of your work without delving into the entire paper.

5. Seek Guidance: If you are unsure about whether to include a research paper in your application, consider seeking guidance from a teacher, counselor, or mentor who can provide valuable feedback on the relevance and quality of your work.

In conclusion, while it is possible to include research papers on your Common App, it is crucial to assess the significance of the paper in relation to your overall application. Ensure that any supplementary materials you submit enhance your candidacy and provide insights into your academic abilities and interests.

Top 3 Authoritative Sources Used:

Common Application Website: The official website of the Common Application provides detailed guidelines on what materials can be included in the application process, including information on supplementary materials like research papers.

College Admissions Experts: Insights from college admissions experts and counselors who have experience reviewing applications can offer valuable perspectives on including research papers in college applications.

Educational Institutions’ Websites: Many colleges and universities publish specific instructions for applicants regarding supplementary materials such as research papers, which can help students understand how best to present their academic work during the application process.

GOD BLESS YOU,
JC.
