You can definitely start preparing for a career in accounting while you are in high school. Here are some things to consider:

  • Take four years of math, including calculus. It's great that your best class is math
  • Sign up for accounting and economics classes if they are available
  • Work hard in English and speech classes so you have strong communication and presentation skills. Accountants and auditors have to be good at working with people and communicating the results of their work.
  • Build strong computer skills, since accountants are working on computers to analyze lots of data

You can also practice accounting skills by creating your own budget, saving money, and sticking to your budget. Also, if you this is available at your high school, run for the office of class treasurer!
