Daniel’s Answer

Hey, I recommend you consider joining the military. There are so many opportunities for you here, It is one of the most honorable things you can do and it comes with a lot of benefits. They will train you in what field you want to go in and it can be valuable in the civilian world. You can go to college afterwards and it will be paid for. You can stay in and you will see so many interesting places and make some of the best friends you could think of. Some of my friends are into real-estate so they do that on the side others do stocks others stream video games. The opportunities are endless.

Corey’s Answer

Thank you for the question Suman. I would recommend considering two different levels of career related advice - 1) which career you'd like to pursue, related coursework or studies and 2) advice once you launch your career. First, you'll need to find what career you'd like to pursue. I'd recommend that you spend time, focus on getting the correct level of schooling or training to prepare yourself, and looking into how to penetrate that field. You should find anyone within that field and interview them to learn about the industry and role. Once settled on the ideal role that mhas opportunity, necessary monetary takehome to ensure your happiness, and something you're interested in, my personal opinion is to set your ship's sails in that direction and don't change course unless there are unpredicted circumstances. Get your undergrad, take your apprenticeship, get your certification, etc. On the second level of career related advice, my recommendation is always the same - work hard, have a curious mind, enhance your network, and volunteer for the jobs that no one else wants. Hope this helps.

Riley’s Answer

Hi, Suman! Speaking from my own experience of having to explore what career path was right for me... here is an exercise that really helped me learn more about what I wanted: Linkedin Sleuthing!

Choose your favorite brand. Is it Starbucks? Is it Spotify? Is it PlayStation? Head over to Linkedin, search and click on that business' page, click on their "People" tab, in the small search bar under that tab search "marketing" or "accounting". You should see that company's employees start to filter! You can then click around and understand the ecosystem of their departments / job titles / career paths. You can even sleuth your way onto someone's profile with a job title you find interesting and see what experience they have that prepared them for the role! Very helpful, and a way to open the door to a possible informational interview.

Wishing you all the best on your career journey!

I'll keep this short and sweet, but my best career advice is to figure out what you enjoy doing and find ways to make a career out of it.

"Do what you love and you'll never work a day in your life."

Tonya’s Answer

Hi Suman,

To offer you advice regarding a career I will ask you to take time to write or type in a journal. The journal will include ideas that come into your imagination to improve the lives of yourself/others, identify problems (small, medium, large) you see/hear, hobbies/interesting activities that make you want to ready/learn/do more and more, and not to be held back by the careers/jobs/titles that exist today.
The reason for this activity is there are careers/jobs that exist today that did not exist in the past or did not exist in the past to the extent that they exist today. We did not always have electronic game designers, now we have experts in the field who not only design online games for fun but also for learning for kids through adulthood. We did not have online videos where one could learn just about anything from how to use Excel (Microsoft, 2021), how to change a tire, or how to practice for a job interview. This is called “Just in Time” learning (Toyota, 1995-2021) or learning when you need the information.
Yes, there are careers/jobs that exist today that you can study which could lead to a position/title that exist. Additionally, there are titles that you may create, design, and invent. It is ok if the vision of the career is not clear at this time. Look at what does exist by watching others in their career from your country as well as those in other countries, realize you can mix majors in college to create a new career path, be careful in listening to those who create limits to a career/new idea (the reason could be perspective on what is versus what could be), and be careful for those who say “that does not exist”. I was informed when I was in middle school that being a midwife did not exist anymore. Low and behold, the career did still exist and I am certified as a nurse-midwife today. Everyone may not know every career, which is why it is important to keep asking, looking, and searching.

Enjoy the career exploration journey.

Kristy’s Answer

Hi Suman.

Here are some questions you can ask yourself to help you zero in on your career selection process:

1) What are you curious about?
2) Is there a particular discipline or study that intrigues you?
3) What activities do you enjoy?

Once you have some answers to the above questions, seek out people in your areas of interest and interview them. You can always ask to volunteer in the industry as well. You can also look for online videos to get more in-depth knowledge of an industry. I also think its a great practice to ask yourself the above questions as you move through your prerequisite classes in college. You may find that the answers change as you are introduced to new disciplines. Good Luck on your journey.

Sanober’s Answer

Hi Suman!

I want to echo some of the previous answers, as well as offer advice on how to approach choosing a career. No one I know has chosen a career out of a lack of inspiration-- what motivates you? What topics in the world interest you? What traits do you have that would make a difference in a specific workplace?

It's important to note that it's completely normal to change your career choices once you start trying out what you may like to be a part of. You must try in order to succeed and it may take a couple of tries to get there.

Best of luck :)

Sanober
