Teaching little kids is a lot of fun! I taught K-2 students, and I ended every day with hilarious stories of the things my students did and said. I love how honest and unfiltered little kids are. I also really enjoyed teaching that age group because so many things are really new and exciting to them, which makes it fun to introduce new topics and get them pumped about learning new things. I have a big sense of humor and don't like to take myself too seriously, so teaching little kids was perfect for me.

Working with small children can also be challenging because you need to teach into a lot of social and life skills outside of academic work. For example, one year I taught Kindergarten so I had to work every day to model social skills like conflict resolution or expressing your feelings --but I also had to spend a lot of time modeling other basic skills like how to hold a pencil, how to stand in line or clean up after yourself. This was something that took me time to get used to. Overall, working with little kids is very fun, and I promise if you choose this line of work you will never be bored.

Zach’s Answer

The simple answer is VERY FUN! MAXIMUM FUN! I loved teaching kids when I was a teacher for 5 years (I'm now in corporate training & development), my mother is a teacher and loves primary school and middle school kids. I have good friends who teach at private and public high schools as well and some love it some say it's just okay. But, every teacher I know enjoys teaching some ages and does not enjoy other ages. Very few like all ages. I've also noticed a lot of teachers start to feel stymied when they reach the peak of their careers unless they are at the university level. The connecting thread between teachers I know is that they deeply enjoy and value education and getting to share that with an age group they enjoy is a bonus. If you're asking because you're interested in teaching as a career I recommend finding ways to get involved in education before committing to a degree and/or credential (provided you are able to). Some options you can do without a degree or credential would be teaching preschool (or at least being an aide), public school substitute teacher, tutor, test prep, or private/charter school teacher.

Zach recommends the following next steps:

Determine your interest level in teaching compared to other fields and what your next steps should/can be
Contact local schools of ages you're interested in, tell them you're interested in potentially pursuing teaching and ask if they accept volunteers (low stakes and you can always quit if you hate it)
Find a way to gain entry-level experience, choose/chart a path, pursue that path best you can

Ma. Edgie’s Answer

Hello Leighton,

I am not a professional teacher, but I usually tutor my cousins, nephews and nieces who are in kindergarten and elementary. I find it fun and excited because even if they are little kids, you can still learn something from them. They are extra sweet too sometimes!

I also agree with Maeve that it is a challenging one too, since kids tend to have shorter patience especially when they are having a tantrums. You have to have a lot of patience in teaching kids.

It is certainly fun! There are many opportunities in which you can teach children. You may be a babysitter, a teacher, a guardian, a coach… whatever the position, you will gain lots of patience and humor. Every day is different! The best part is being a role model and teaching them invaluable skills.

Josh’s Answer

This is from a relative who teaches kids.

Teaching kids is fun because it allows us to share our knowledge and experiences with kids. I believe that teaching kids at such a young age is so important to their overall growth in life. Kids learn the best when they’re having fun and what better way to show them fun with sharing moments with them that will last for a long time. Teaching kids also fun because you can turn almost anything into a game and you don’t need a lot of resources in order to have fun with kids.
