i would like to become either a forensic scientist or a detective, where do i start?

Thank you comment icon Hello Alysia- I would suggest getting a Bachelors of Arts in Criminal Justice and then an Masters of Science in Criminal Justice if you choose to go the detective route. If you prefer the forensic scientist route, I would research universities that offer forensic science degrees and see what prerequisites are necessary. Alexa Speller

Hello,
I would recommend finding a college that specializes in the programs you are interested in. Two examples are Florida State University and John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York City. Both of these colleges offer top notch education and internships in the fields you are interested in. Their professors are experienced professionals that have extensive experience in the field they are teaching and can offer unique insight and advice to their students. These schools are also able to offer unique internship opportunities for students nearing the end of their degrees.

Find a college that offers a degree in Forensic Science or Criminal Justice/Criminology/Sociology.

In Florida, they are two different career paths. Being a detective requires you to be a sworn law enforcement officer. Which means you must go to the law enforcement academy. This path does not necessarily mean you need a degree but it’s strongly encouraged in today’s time.

CSI’s are not law enforcement, per say, meaning they do not have arrest powers as detectives do. They only work the crime scenes. This would mean a forensic science degree.

The other option is if you go federal (ATF, DEA, FBI) you could have both worlds.

But, you have some decisions make ;)
