How do you build a successful career, without any experience?

Many job offers/positions require a person to have experience. If I'm fresh out of College, of course I'd be looking for a place to work. How will I be able to prove myself in my field, even though I'm a rookie/newbie. #jobs #salary #job-market #career #job

Hi Eboni,


There are plenty of ways for you to get experience while you are in school. A great way to get experience is to complete internships during the school year or over the summer. During this time you will get a sense of what it is like to work for a particular company, make connections and gain real world experience. You can also work part time during school. Getting a part time campus job will boost your resume. If there is a class that you really enjoy, apply to become a Teaching Assistant. Any of these experiences will improve your resume and you can always refer to these positions during an interview.

Volunteer! My daughter wanted to work at a design firm when she finished college - but they would only hire those with 5 or more years of experience. So she went to their offices and offer to work for free for them. She'd do anything they needed. Coffee runs; putting away samples; ordering lunches; keeping the office fridge clean; filing; etc. She literally did any reasonable thing they asked her to do. She showed up every day at 8AM and left every day at 5PM. She made friends in the office. She impressed the boss with her willingness to do whatever needed to be done. Pretty soon they were trusting her with small projects. 6 months later; they offered her a full time designer job.

I know not everyone can afford to work for free for 6 months (and she did have a second retail job in the evenings and the weekends to make her rent and eat). But her hustle and hard work paid off with a dream job in the end.

The first option is internships, especially with the companies you want to be hired by. Often, though, the quickest way to rack up job experience is to start at smaller companies. It's much easier to get hired by small companies that aren't looking for a long resume. Plus, it is likely you'll move up the ladder quicker in a smaller company than the ones you've been looking at so far. I'm more familiar with the pastoral work world. There, one often works at small rural churches to get the experience on their resume to be considered by medium churches which is how they build their resumes (and professional networks) to end up at the larger churches.

You can find many entry level or part time jobs to work at while attending school. For any specialty field you are looking into, then internships may be a great way to start. Many jobs are posted online these days but you can certainly go into company offices to see if they have any available openings as well.

Hi Eboni,

There are many ways to build a career without experience. I would recommend to create a Linkedin account with your school history, languages you know etc. It would be good to try to find an internship during your school times, so you would be a part of a company that might hire you immediately after school.
