What do I need to study to become an entrepreneur?

Hello Colleen,
To be an entrepreneur you need many things that you don't necessarily learn on college. You need to be a leader, focused on delivering results, inspire your employees, have charism and get people excited. Also, you should always keep learning, reading and training yourself.
Nevertheless, for starters, you need an idea/product or something to build the business around it .

Being an entrepreneur is a great aspiration to work towards! With that being said, you will certainly want to make sure you have strong leadership and communication skills, as well as a good understanding of the market you're interested in. Many colleges offer business degrees, with a focus on entrepreneurship, and they often focus on marketing skills, communication/public speaking, how to develop and execute on a business plan, as well as basic accounting skills. There are quite a few steps that go into running your own business, so it may be wise to do research on the market/service you're considering, and focus on networking. Meeting new people and having others that you can discuss ideas with can be very beneficial in any situation.

Business classes are great way to get you mind working in becoming an entrepreneur, focus on Marketing, Economics and Accounting. I believe that the best way to be a good entrepreneur is working in a field that interest you so you can learn the business. Being an entrepreneur is harder that many people think so getting into a business that you are familiar with and more important a field that you are passionate about will make everything a little easier. Sharing your ideas with multiple people helps, don't be afraid that somebody will steal your idea, they won't. Learn, study and more important be involved.

You can study business or any subject that is about your business, say even a double major. For example: Business and Culinary degrees for a Restaurant business. I would research different business to find out what you are passionate about and go with it.

I would highly recommend studying someone who is already an entrepreneur. Associate yourself with them and read a lot of books ( books that are relevant to your field as well as personal growth books). Make sure the person who you are studying has created the results you are looking for!

Great question! I say in order to become a successful entrepreneur you need to study the needs and wants of your consumers. Consumer behavior may not be a bad class to take. It helps you understand the minds of consumers and exactly what they are looking for when shopping. There is a whole science behind the mind of a consumer and the psychological aspect of it all is very interesting. Once you learn the needs and wants of consumers try to find a target audience in which your products will become appealing. If you really want to take it up a notch try to find something the current market is missing and how your product can benefit others. Once you sell the benefits of your product everything else will fall right into place. You also most certainly need some sort of sales and or management background.
You want to make certain you remain innovative and focus on the trends in the current market. Write down your over all vision for your business and always do a SWOT analysis (STRENGTHS WEAKNESS OPPORTUNITIES THREATS) of the market and your business. Focus on providing excellent customer service as well because at the end of the day they are the most important.
