Hi! I thought I'd add a global perspective to this answer by include the typical earnings for Civil Engineers in the UK and Europe also for anyone interested:

Graduate civil engineer salaries usually start at around £25,500, rising to £35,500 with two years' experience in most locations, although there is a 10-20% premium for high cost areas such as London, Brussels, Paris, Switzerland etc
After 5 years post graduate, typical earnings are circa £50k to 60k as basic salary. Engineering Employers tend to give additional perks on top of the basic salary such as annual performance bonus of 10 to 20%, company car or car allowance, and also if you are working on projects in for example construction, it is common to be paid a travel allowance or subsistence allowance to compensate for relocation.

The gold standard for the engineering profession is to achieve Chartership, which is available through the ICE (Institute of Civil Engineers) globally. The average salary of Chartered Civil Engineers is £80,000. This takes into account senior civil engineers who go into executive management functions and it is not uncommon for civil engineers at the very top of organisations such as Chief Executive or Operations Director type roles, to command salaries above £100,000 to £1m+.
