Hi Meghan,

It is great to know that you have a desire to become a social worker because the field definitely needs social workers like yourself. I am a Licensed Social Worker and I see the social work field evolving a lot due to the needs of diverse populations; expansion of programs; and difficulties that we are facing in our society. The outlook of the social field is good because there is an increased number of job opportunities for social workers.

It is becoming more of a high demand for social workers to work with individuals, families, groups and communities. According to the statistics of the Bureau of Labor, the employment of healthcare social workers is projected to grow 17 percent from 2018 to 2028, much faster than the average for all occupations. Healthcare social workers will continue to be needed to help aging populations and their families adjust to new treatments, medications, and lifestyles.

Employment of mental health and substance abuse social workers is projected to grow 18 percent from 2018 to 2028, much faster than the average for all occupations. Employment will grow as more people seek treatment for mental illness and substance abuse. In addition, drug offenders are increasingly being sent to treatment programs, which are staffed by these social workers, rather than being sent to jail. In addition, child and family social workers will be needed to work with families to strengthen parenting skills, prevent child abuse, and identify alternative homes for children who are unable to live with their biological families. In schools, more social workers will be needed as student enrollments rise.

I hope this information helps you to decide on what area of social work that you are interested in.

Explore your interests
Network with social workers who are already in the field.
Volunteer and select a social work internship of your choice

I would ask that you do some additional research on this. Are you looking to give back where there is the greatest need or do you have a strong desire to help people? Either way, those are great reasons to support this type of work, but use some research and intuition to determine a career that you are truly passionate about.
