How can I get a career in fashion merchandising?

Hi Caitlin,


There are a couple of options for you to consider.


The first is to study fashion merchandising in college. Many colleges offer programs in fashion merchandising. If you go this route I also recommend you participate in an internship while in school since this will provide you with some experience and further insight into fashion merchandising.


The other option is to work in a retail company that promote from within to fashion merchandising positions. You can then get an entry level position and work your way into a fashion merchandising position. Nordstrom is a company that offers this career path.

Hi Caitlin, While I'm in marketing, my wife was a buyer for companies such as J. Crew, Bergdorf Goodman and Tiffany and Co. Her background was an art history major at a liberal arts college, a keen interest and awareness of fashion and then she started off as an assistant buyer. Long hours and hard work, but it's a fun, exciting world to be in. Hope this helps and best of luck!

I think starting to build up a portfolio is always helpful. A portfolio is a collection of works (drawings, photos, samples, etc) that you keep bundled together and that you can show to any future employer or attach to a university application. It is useful to demonstrate your skills, and style, and what you are already capable of doing.

I know of many friends who were shop assistants for fashion retailers such as urban outfitters or topshop during their highschool/university days and then ended up working in the fashion industry as designers or buyers/merchandisers.

A good place to start is to do a summer internship or a graduate program at a fashion company or even start as a floor shop assistant for a brand that you like and are passionate about.
