Sheila’s Answer

Hi Jovany:

I appreciate the mechanics and technicians that perform maintenance on my vehicle. Here's some general information for you to consider and research. Automotive mechanics and technicians learn from more experienced workers.

Here are some of the obstacles that auto mechanics face:
• PHYSICAL STRAIN - Many mechanics are around heavy equipment. They have to constantly lift items which can have a strain on their back over time. Also, they may spend long amounts of time bent over or lying on their back. They must use various tools that put them in awkward positions. During a mechanic’s youth, physical strain may not be a problem. As mechanics age it can be more difficult to do certain tasks.

• HEARING - Mechanics are sometimes exposed to loud sounds on a daily basis for extended lengths of time. As mechanics age they may begin to experience hearing loss.

• SAFETY - Mechanics usually work in unsafe environments. A simple mistake can cause a mechanic to lose his or someone else’s life. They have to work with dangerous tools that can cut, smash and maul fingers and toes.

• RUDE CUSTOMERS - When customers need a mechanic, something has unexpectedly broken. Customers may be frustrated because they are inconvenienced. Mechanics have to deal with customers’ frustrations, especially if the cost for repair exceeds a customer’s budget.

OUTLOOK - -
Automotive service technicians and mechanics held about 756,600 jobs in 2019. The largest employers of automotive service technicians and mechanics were as follows:
• Automobile dealers 33%
• Automotive mechanical and electrical repair and maintenance 27
• Self-employed workers 13
• Automotive parts, accessories, and tire stores 8

Thank you comment icon Hi Sheila, this is good information around job out look but it doesn't answer the student's question. If you could provide any more info around the hardest parts of being an auto mechanic, that would be greatly appreciated Gurpreet Lally, Admin
