Chemical engineer here with 8 years working in energy. Your question is extremely broad because energy engineer could mean anything from folks who do the calculations to optimize HVAC energy usage in large office buildings, oil & gas or even renewables. I can tell you that whatever your personality is you can find a home working in energy. If you're a super nerd you can find a job just doing calculations all day or if you're big people person you can work in technical sales with every job type in-between. Personally I'm little ADD and a people person so I found a home in project management getting things built working in oil & gas. I work 50% field/50% office and I like constantly bouncing around between tasks. You need to evaluate what you like doing and don't be afraid to try new things.
Thank you comment icon Thank you very much..this is exactly what I was searching for in an answer! I am willing to start my career in either renewables or oil and gas. I am definitely NOT a nerdy person. I am the kind of person who prefers office work and a little bit of field work (only because they prefer males and I am a female). I just don't know what are the office jobs an energy engineer can do? what are the types of office jobs and what are their tasks? Rana

I don't work in energy engineering, but you should know that no matter what replies you get, you could enjoy your work in any field. It all depends on your outlook and education. I'm looking forward to my work in the future regardless of what industry I end up in (one industry could very well be energy, considering my degree in mechanical engineering). If you receive a reply from someone saying energy engineering is enjoyable - great! But if you receive a reply saying it is subpar and you shouldn't go into the field - don't take that to heart. There are too many factors in life to consider.

Also, the world of energy is incredible in my opinion. I've wanted to work in solar since I was a little girl and it's still a goal of mine. How could it not be enjoyable to help change the world for the better?

Hope this helps!

The world is completely reliant on energy. The energy industry is undergoing a transformation from fossil fuels to alternative sources of energy. There are several advancements being made in this industry: everything from material sciences to semi-conductors to battery technology is changing everyday .

The developed nations have invested heavily into research hoping that the technological innovations will bring prosperity to their people. In developing nations, they are heavy reliance on carbon due to economical factors. Hence, I would suggest that you evaluate the socio-economic factors in your region prior embarking into this journey.
