Hi Manjot! Great question, so glad to hear you want to get into this field. Certainly the world could use more psychology counselors. I found several links as to where you can volunteer in the counselling psychology field, which you can see below. Volunteering in general is just a huge huge hugely great thing for you to do. 1) it obviously helps others 2) it gives you a sense of purpose and a feeling of accomplishment and boosts your confidence, and 3) it helps in basically every application you can imagine: for schools, for jobs, for basically anything, it's ALWAYS a great idea to have volunteering work on there. Check out the links below and please let me know if you have any questions in the comments!

Margaret’s Answer

Hello, I’m a Licensed Professional Counselor with 16 years of experience. A crisis center (there are many kinds) that has a hotline is a great place to volunteer to see if the counseling field is a good fit for you. The Red Cross (or the equivalent in BC) has psychological first aid courses that can also be helpful. Good luck to you!

Margaret recommends the following next steps:

Research crisis hotlines
Psychological First Aid training
Mental Health First Aid training

Ching’s Answer

This is a fantastic initiative! Given the current Covid19 situation, counseling is required more than ever. To help you prepare for this, do try and take some training beforehand so you are equipped with a "toolset" to help others. There are many free online courses available (eg: Coursera, EDX, etc) that you can explore. Some centres where you volunteer at may also offer some basic training. Best of luck!

You can search for local volunteer opporutnities related to counseling. For example, I searched "BC Canada counseling volunteer opportunities" and found the Crisis Centre Volunteer page:

https://crisiscentre.bc.ca/volunteer/

As well as the Canadian Mental Health Association's Volunteer page:
