It’s exciting to be at the beginning of a career. An associate degree in social science indicates your interest in working with people. Such positions as a teacher aide would enable you to get experience with children. Many social service agencies also need workers with your qualifications. Another area of possibility would be the criminal justice field. I remember as a consultant to a juvenile detention center the staff really were the first line of support to these troubled youth. Good luck to you.

Hi Rhina!

What specifically are you looking to do with your Psychology degree? I would start there. There are so many sub-fields in Psychology - Behavioral, Cognitive, Organizational, Sports, Forensics, Environmental, etc. If there is a specific field you would like to get into, I would focus on finding an internship in that field.

The great thing about Psychology is that it is the study of people, and every career has to do with people! You can gain experience from a job in sales to a job at a fast food restaurant. Some great opportunities I would look into are childcare, education, healthcare, community centers, summer camps, assisted living homes, homeless shelters, and juvenile detention centers. Hands on experience working with people will make the biggest impact if you are looking into the traditional therapy route of Psychology.

Hi Rhina:

Congratulations on your AA degree, hope you took time to acknowledge and celebrate your accomplishments. I think your interest in finding an internship or employment is a great next step as you transfer to a CSU for your BA degree. It would be helpful for you identify specific fields and/or populations you want experience with. Do you want to work with youth and families or adults in substance abuse or foster care, etc.

Once you have that info, start researching some local non-profits, schools, government agencies, private agencies that provide those services/programs to your community. You can see if those organizations have positions open for entry level positions or internships - such as a case manager, outreach worker, parent-school liaison, para educator. If not, you can request an informational interview to learn more about their organizer, services, and advice on how to get prepared for an opening in the near future.

You can also go to the Career Center at the Community College you just graduated from, organizations often have positions/internships posted there as well.

Best,

angela

Rhina, the psychology field is exciting and full of opportunities! My best advice is to become a Mental Health Technician (MHT) in an acute psychiatric hospital or and MHT for a major medical hospital that has a psychiatric unit. Most places are always hiring, especially right now. The vetting process is thorough. And this would be a good test of the waters to see the whole spectrum of the psychology field in real life!
Good luck.
