Candice’s Answer

There are many credentials for people who want to specialize in working with addictions. Some of them include but are not limited to the following:

- Drug & Alcohol Counselor

- Clinical Addiction Specialist/Advanced Alcohol & Drug Counselor

- Prevention Specialist

- Criminal Justice Addictions Professional

Becoming certified as a Drug & Alcohol Counselor is one of the entry level steps for those interested in addiction careers. It usually only requires the minimum education of a high school diploma. You will do things such as screening, crisis intervention, & record keeping in regard to client treatment and services of those with addictive disorders. Advancement to one of the higher addiction careers usually requires additional education in human services along with a clinical internship. Licensed Clinical Addictions Counselors supervise Certified Alcohol & Drug Counselors.

Hi, I'm not sure if you mean a certificate in high school or college. There are some different paths if counseling is something you are interested in. You can go the social worker route or licenced mental health counselor which have very different requirements. I myself am a social worker and work as an independent therapist. With a bachelors degree in social work you can do group therapy bjt need a masters to do individual counseling Hope this helps.

I notice your location seems to be in Ontario, Canada. Being in the U.S., I'm not familiar with the mental health and/or substance abuse treatment opportunities in Canada. Maybe a place to get more localized information regarding your question would be college or high school career advisement services. The ability to provide services to persons with mental health or substance abuse problems depends a lot on the amount of education, intern training, certifications and, in the U.S., state licensing requirements. Providing tele-health services, for example, most likely would require the same sort of licensing or certification as doing in-person, in-clinic or hospital services. In general, any sort of "human services" requires some sort of licensing, and getting qualified to apply for a license means meeting certain minimums of education and training.

Hi if you have your diploma get your CADAC license counsel D&A' s Gambling
If you're interested in couseling you can go for social work or Mental Health Counseling. But find out your strengths and weaknesses. That way you'll know if you really want to help the people who really suffer from these issues. But understand there are limited funds and resources being issued and more people are affected. But good luck with the love of Jesus live well.

If you can get your certification in counseling or therapy, Teletherapy is very popular right now. Online with a camera can still be a very good counseling session. Also look into non-profit organization, just because they are non profit under the laws of non profit does not mean they do not pay their employees... or therapists or counselors.... google it up! Good luck

Racheal’s Answer

Hello!
I have over 7 years in working in substance abuse related fields. There are options, however it's important to keep in mind the type of license and certification. Honestly, it's more important to be licensed as a mental health professional to provide clinical billiable services. You will learn about substance abuse through schooling, that will prep you for licensure.
There are certification programs however, they are similar to a bachelor degree or graduate degree programs, in that you have to obtain clinical hours just as you would for your license.
Either way there are several types of agencies that provide substance abuse work. Good luck!

Racheal recommends the following next steps:

Non-profit agency (residental, parital hospitalization, and IOP)
Goverment facilities or county facilities
Prisons
For-profit agencies
Detox centers
