Danielle’s Answer

The best way to qualify for a sports team is to practice! Find local pick-up games and learn how to cooperate with other people as a team. It would help to do running drills as well, since basketball requires a lot of sprints and footwork.

Samuel’s Answer

Madison,

It's exciting to tryout for a team and great experience, too! Danielle is right, it takes practice to improve at anything. First, I'd get a basketball and work on my skills like shooting and dribbling. Even if I didn't have a goal to shoot on, practicing dribbling will help multiple skills like hand-eye coordination and footwork. Second, I'd watch other people play basketball and pickup on patterns and plays to develop my Basketball IQ. Watching the WNBA and men's/women's NCAA basketball is a good place to start because they're so disciplined and technical when it comes to the basics like defense and schemes. There are plenty of online videos that help teach skills and schematics as well.

Good luck!

Lisa’s Answer

Hi Madison, I agree with the other answers that focus on the skills required of a basketball player. I'd also like to add that being a team player is critical - for any sport or even in the business world. Basketball, as you know, is a fast-moving sport and the 5 players on the court must be able to communicate and work together to execute plays. You must be willing to put aside any ego and play as a cohesive team.

It is also very important to understand the game; yes, the skills are important but you must have an in-depth understanding of the game requirements, regulations, etc. You need to be able to memorize the plays and that takes some "homework". While running plays in practice may feel repetitive, it is such for a reason. Executing plays during a game is key.

Be willing to learn from your coach and team mates; you all have the same goal and can learn a lot from each other. In basketball - and in life - we can all learn something so listen to the coaching to improve your game. Always show up! What I mean by that is, when you come to practice or a game; give 100% every time. Show that you are committed to the team and its success and are willing to do the hard work to be a member on the team.

Most of all; have fun. Work hard but enjoy yourself. You can learn so much by being on a team and these skills will help you in every part of your life.

I wish you much luck! Shoot for the stars!

Abhinav’s Answer

Hi Danielle. The number one most important thing that I can advise you to do is to stay in tip top shape. Basketball is built around proper conditioning and often times it is conditioning that decides ball games. Once you get this conditioning foundation established I suggest you work very hard on your shooting and ball handling. Put it all together through 5 on 5 play.

Kiirsten’s Answer

Good Evening Madison!

Similar to Danielle and Samuel's answers-- I too will add to practice as much as you can! Hands on experience is great, but reading and watching techniques can also be beneficial for you. I personally think the best tip for being considered for any sports team, sales team, any job really-- is to have the right attitude and have good sportsmanship. Dribbling, shooting, passing, etc can all be taught-- but your attitude and how you present yourself is all on YOU. The fact that you're asking here tells me that you have the right attitude about wanting to play which is great, so continue that drive, be kind to others, and show your potential coach that you're determined and are willing to learn and grow.

Good luck!

Ally’s Answer

Hi Madison – Similar to Kiirsten's answer, having basic basketball skills is definitley necessary to make the team but the most important aspects are your willingness to work hard and your coachability. I've played sports all my life and can tell you I was never the best player on the team but I always worked hard and listened to my coaches. Being able to take advice/crustructive criticism and apply it is not only a beneficial skill for athletes but it's a crucial skill for the working world and life in general. Best of luck making the team – you got this!!
