Professional gamers love using Alienware computers which have really big processors and visual processors (also known as GPUs or Graphical Processing Units).
For Professional gaming programmers, it really depends on what type of gaming programmer you are referring to when you ask what computers do they use. For example, if you code iPhone games, you probably use a Macbook while if you code android games or web games, you might use anything from an average windows laptop to a linux desktop.
Most programmer gravitate towards unix based machines or macbooks (which run a version of unix) which gives them more flexibility to code. These programmers tend to be less focused on the brand of the computer and more interested in ensuring the computer has a fast processor and a large amount of RAM which enables them to test the code and improve it quickly.

For xbox and ps3, it depends. As you see in the last paragraph below, most programmers gravitate towards computers that run unix, but there is no hard coded rule.

If you want to save a few hundred bucks, I'd definitely recommend building your own PC as an alternative to buying Alienware/Razer/etc. The advantage of building your own PC is that you can customize it to fit your personal needs.

For example, If you plan on doing simple game scripting with say Unity's API with C# Mono Framework as well as some 3DS Max animation and rendering, then you can get away with a mediocre processor such as an i3 and a slightly bumped up GPU such as a Geforce GTX 670.

If you plan on using actual compiled languages such as C++, Python, and/or Java(IDK why) then you might consider spending more money towards a better processor such as a fifth-gen intel 4570k i5 (i7s are pretty excessive nowadays.)

There are some pretty excellent PC Build Guides on YouTube and TomsHardware is an amazing resource for benchmarks and tests. Also, since you are doing video game programming, most video game programming tools will be present with the Engine SDK. If you need to however, you can always dual boot Linux alongside Windows.
