The question of getting job experience is different from the question of getting a job. Gaining job "experience" is less about the money but to be able to tell a story that you did something, that you solved certain problems successfully, that you're capable of doing this and that. Why do you want to have that experience?

Any (paid) job experience could be helpful to get some money and some understanding of how a specific business work. An initial job experience can lead to another, and then another one. Specially if you are starting, there's nothing to loose right? Start with any job that you can do reasonable well and get money for doing it. Try to apply for jobs at local businesses and/or start offering any service you can do for some money.

Job experience can get you personal satisfaction, but is also a pre-requisite for some jobs. Are you looking to get to a specific job that requires that experience? What is that job that you want to do?

Angel recommends the following next steps:

What's the bigger plan? Why are you looking for job experience?
Is there someone you admire? What career steps that person took? What can you learn from that person career decisions? What job experiences that person had?
Is there someone that you don't want to become? What career steps that person took? What can you learn from that person career decisions? What job experiences that person had?

Hey Trevor. First of all, I think it's great that you are being proactive; getting experience at a young age will teach you many skill sets that will help you in the future. In regards to your question, you can look for jobs around your area. Check out restaurants, grocery stores, etc. Also, don't forget about volunteer work! If there is an industry you are particularly interested in, I recommend you try to seek work there as it will benefit you even more in the future.

If you don't already, you will probably need experience related to the industry that you are hoping to get a job in. If you can, try to land an internship related to the field you're pursuing, go to networking events, and work on building your skill set. Make yourself as employable a person as possible an keep reaching out to people who might be able to help you out some day.

Hi Trevor,

Great question you have asked! Since you are still in high school, could you maybe get a job where your family works if possible? You could do something very entry level such as be a receptionist, busser, or host at any restaurants you may have near you. When you go to apply for the job, make sure you are professionally dressed and be your best self.

You indicate you are a student (High School) so will assume you are looking for a job in your area. Could check out if food service or retail businesses in your area have any employment opportunities available. It might not be want you want for a lifetime career but does help you build up employment experience, which sounds like a goal.

Hi Trevor,

Job experience comes in many facets. As you go through life you accrue experience - from assisting with household chores, learning to cook, and even caring for relatives. These are things that allow you to show a potential employer that you are steadfast, eager, helpful, and energetic. As a young person, you can add these life experiences as skills to your resume.

What you want to show is a willingness to learn and grow. You can show that you have an open mind, can accept the challenges of new skills, and possess the ability to adapt to change. Never discount the day-to-day of life growth, as experience that can move into skills.

Also, volunteer whenever and however you can. The skills and knowledge you gain are immeasurable, and can lead to new and exciting opportunities. I believe this might be really effective in smaller communities - as people will see your work ethic and pass the word to others. Again, leading to more chances to increase your experience portfolio.

It looks like you live in a smaller town, which sometimes makes getting a job, (or job experience) a little harder, but not impossible.
You could start your own business offering to do landscaping, yard work, odd jobs for people? If you do that, get yourself a small receipt book, and any time someone pays you, give them a receipt. Keep your copy of the receipt in a binder or file folder, to show proof of income.
This will also be your way of showing job experience. If there is a farm or nursery near by, see if you can work there, same with diners or restaurants, deli's, any place like that.

Hello there! The first step in a job search is definitely difficult, but I think a place to start is to see how you want to market yourself. You mention that you are a farmer with row crops and some cows, so it might be useful to list out some of the skills you have been able to take up by handling some of those responsibilities. These skills don't have to be super in-detail, but can be more broad like disciplined, punctual/dependable, detail-oriented, etc. By highlighting these skills when you're applying to jobs, you show that you know what skills you have to offer, and employers can see the possible benefits from your work. Any experience is still experience, so starting to build that up is great.
