Jason’s Answer

There are a lot of life skills that unfortunately are not taught in school, personal finance being one of them. I recommend reading up online and watching youtube videos (eg. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SJL4UT4wAxc) which explains the misconception regarding tax brackets (they are more like tax 'pockets', not entire brackets). You might have a high school or college class that covers personal finance briefly (I had a brief exercise in taxes and budgeting in my economics high school course), but that's pretty much it. Most of it will need to be self-taught. If you have any questions feel free to post them. I highly, highly recommend watching educational youtube videos (eg. ones with lots of infographics, or lots of helpful info eg. Graham Stephen's youtube channel) . I do not recommend watching videos of "gurus" and "experts". Just look for information, not for a get rich quick scheme, and you'll be good

Kim’s Answer

I learned tax basics in a HS business math class. If that is not offered, you may look to your bank/credit union. A lot of financial institutions have money management programs for teens, I don't think they include taxes, but it doesn't hurt to check.

Wow! So, Utah actually has one of the highest ratings in the country for teaching financial literacy in school. Not sure if that includes taxes though.
You should ask around with your teachers/counselors.

It's great that you are taking an interest in this!

Simeon’s Answer

There might be some business classes that do this in high school, but in general taxes are not a topic that is covered in grade school.

Dr. James’s Answer

That is an EXCELLENT question. I agree that schools should teach us how to do our own taxes. I cannot give you a reason why they don't. If you are truly interested, you can ask your school administration to see if they can teach a course.
