Steve’s Answer

From my earliest memories, I was fascinated with the stars and planets. I read most every book on the subject in my elementary school library. You could say that Astronomy chose me.

Having said that, I warn you that I never actually made a living in Astronomy. Only the top students with PhD's (I was not one) can do that. The minor in Physics was my "working knowledge" that got me a start in Geophysics.

Knowledge of Astronomy was helpful. A lot of the math behind seismic surveys with arrays of geophones is quite similar to that for arrays of radio telescopes, for example.

I participated in the field. I was able to attend the Lunar and Planetary Science Conference for many years, When people asked what planet I studied, I replied, "You're standing on it!" ;-)

Steve recommends the following next steps:

Learn all you can in many fields. As Robert Heinlein said, "Specialization is for insects".
