I think this is a solid question. You are obviously intuitive about the future, and I recommend that you spend your free time learning everything about the VR world that you can. This will hopefully help spark new ideas.

Start cross-training. Learn more than one skill set. For example, if you are a 3D artist, get training in animation as well.
Stay up-to-date on the latest VR trends. Follow the topic on social media, attending webinars, attending conferences, and attending game jams.
If you want to get your foot in the door, apply for non-developer jobs with a VR company. There are plenty of positions in VR for non-developers such as quality assurance, project management, business analysts, and more. These are great positions to start with as you learn more about VR.
Training is available from online resources such as Train Simple, Unity, iOS and Android dev books, and Code Academy.
Participate in online communities, including Polycount for 3D and Invision Blog for UX/UI.

Hi Bill:

Talk about an industry that is set to take off!

I'm guessing you’re interested in the software side of the industry, though artists and visionaries are required too!

Gain experience designing and developing with 3D modeling software, programming experience with C/C++, game development or graphics programming,

Check out this nifty site...https://unity3d.com/learn

I read a fascinating discussion on Quora about the skills needed [https://www.quora.com/What-are-the-skills-needed-to-learn-virtual-reality-and-what-are-the-resources-to-learn-virtual-reality]. In case you are unable to access the URL without being a member; here is a snippet of what Tee Jia Hen, CEO of VRcollab had to say:

"...You can create VR apps or games that will increase the productivity, simulate VR environment to help people learn faster or entertain people. The software that you created will be install in Mac, PC, Play Station or Google cardboard (android or ios).

This will be the one of the first frontier of VR. You will need to figure out UI/UX of VR and how to engage the user in a meaningful way that fully utilise the power of VR.

You will need to master a 3D engine. Unity is a good starting point, the programming language that it uses is C# or javascript.

If you are new to programming languages. I would recommend you to learn javascript with this resources. sethvincent/javascripting. If you are stuck, read this book. Eloquent JavaScript.

This is a good tutorial to make you more familiar with unity.
Roll-a-ball tutorial
After you are done with it. You can build the VR version of it.
