Sydney’s Answer

Jamie,

I did a Google search for "game designer" to learn about what the job is and what is needed to be successful. The first thing that caught my attention was "Game design is an exciting, rewarding and multi-faceted field with promising job prospects. However, becoming a game designer can be a challenging journey. Passion, patience, and persistence are essential!" from https://www.cgspectrum.com/blog/what-is-game-design. The same site stated "It's not just about playing games and having ideas. You need to not only understand how to apply your ideas into many different, and often conflicting, areas of game design; you must also understand HOW to design, WHAT to design, WHEN to design each feature, and WHY you are designing what you are designing." This role requires you to know a little about many different things since it is "generally a cross between a writer, artist and programmer." To me this means that a game designer has to be able to balance 3 different jobs at the same time. Writing an awesome story line alone is not going to sell a game idea without knowing how to translate that experience to a programmer to design the mechanics of the game. The artist experience will connect the story to the game mechanics.

Education is going to be the best way to increase your skillset to be successful as a game designer. There are courses you can take through various sources but I highly recommending research on the courses and the source to determine if they are reputable. This way you avoid potentially spending money on something that is either a scam or lacking quality. There is also the path of formal education and degree as a programmer. The decision to pursue a college degree is also important to research so that you pick a college that will provide courses relevant to game development and programming since your goal is to get into that field. If you have a few more years before having to worry about college, I would suggest looking into online courses to get started in understanding all facets of game design.

Some game designer jobs may require a bachelor's degree in computer programming or fine art, while others may only require a high school diploma. While talent is essential to game developers, knowledge and work experience in a related field like graphic design or computer science can help make you more of an asset.

My advise, you can start learning by how to start design simple games by searching Google, that will give you a head start if you decide to pursue a degree in that feild. I am a big believer in self learning
