Completing a Mass Communications Degree will allow you to examine and analyze these forms of mass media, and even more importantly, equip you to gain successful work in this continuously evolving field. A Degree in Mass Communications is an interdisciplinary course of study and opens up doors to a spectrum of careers, from advertising and broadcasting to public relations and publishing.


What is Mass Communications?


Mass communications is information delivered to as many people as possible at virtually the same time. It involves news, entertainment, branding, knowledge, advice or other forms of information being relayed via newspapers, magazines, television, radio, newsletters, advertisements and online channels. Mass communication continues to evolve concurrently with the development of new media, namely the virtual world.


As part of a Degree in Mass Communications, you will take a variety of courses, usually including those that touch on advertising, journalism, communication skills, public relations, psychology, sociology, political science, media literacy and types of mass media. Almost all programs offer an internship or practicum option, something that all students should take advantage of – such hands-on experience could lead to a long term relationship with a potential employer.

It is important to keep in mind, when pursuing motivational speaking, that a speakers value can come from education/ credentials, but also experience. When you look at some top TedTalks, speakers or even internet videos, a lot of these people draw their credibility from life experience. Anyone who has a compelling personality and a significant message can be a motivational speaker. I would focus largely on your communication/ story telling skills and the ability to craft a meaningful message. You can practice giving talks to friends, you can create Youtube videos or give talks to whatever groups you are a part of.

You've picked a great combination of topics to study. Understanding how the mind works -- the psychology behind motivation and persuasion -- will be very helpful. And understanding the fundamentals of journalism will also help. But I like Daniela Silva's suggestion of a Mass Communications degree a little better than journalism, given your goals. Ultimately, out there in the real world, you will probably not be able to hold a typical journalism job AND be a motivational speaker -- they would be considered conflicts of interest. That doesn't mean journalists can't become great speakers -- just that they wouldn't make money doing it. The skills you learn in mass comm could help you set out on your own and will pair just a little bit better than journalism in my opinion.

I am personally a big advocate of pursuing one's passion. That being said, I do not have any experience in either field (journalism or motivational speaking), but tend to believe that pursuing both would have its benefits. More often than not, being multi-dimensional is an asset in employment and the workforce.
Suggestions that I have, would be to research and gain more knowledge about the two fields individually and combined. Are there any successful people that have used this combination to further their career? If so what can you find out about them? And, if at all possible, can you arrange an informational interview?
Keep in mind that you cannot fail or make a mistake, because whatever you do will provide a learning opportunity and will get you closer to where you need to be and what you need to do. Listen to your heart more than your head, and stay the course.
