How can I guide myself towards a career as a dentist?

Hi Kenya,
Dentistry career is a big journey but everything is worth it if your true passion is dentistry field. You need to study a lot ! And when I say this , it’s because sometimes you will need to put your hobbies not as priorities in life since dentistry is very time consuming. The communication that you will have with your patients is very heartwarming, you will be part of a positive change in their life and it’s one of the best feeling. I’ll suggest you to start doing some dental volunteer so you can have an idea of this field.

Study! Study! Study!
You’ll need all your basic sciences on the college level, success with the DAT’s and great letters of recommendations from professors and dentists currently in practice. You’ll also need to shadow dentists for 100+ hours prior to applying for dental school.
It’s a long road and you really don’t start your life until you’re around 30 years old.

Although I am a dental hygienist, I am currently applying to dental school myself!
Studying plays a large role in your journey to becoming a dentist but there are other factors as well. There are many prerequisites to apply to dental school but typically these classes include biology, chemistry, organic chemistry, calculus, physics, and english. Of course, some schools may require additional science coursework such as anatomy, biochemistry, and microbiology but not all will. You will definitely need to study to do well on your Dental Admission Test (DAT).
Gaining shadowing opportunities will help you learn more about the roles and responsibilities in the field of dentistry. In addition to shadowing over 100 hours to apply to dental school, you will also need to show how well-rounded you are through your extracurriculars. It is important that you choose to do extracurriculars based on what you are passionate about, rather than what will look good on your resume because during dental school interviews they may ask you about your experiences. These experiences can include volunteering (doesn't have to be health related), work experience, research, and student leadership.
