Thank you comment icon Karla: Hi. As you likely know, to become a lawyer, you will need to attend Law School, which generally takes three years to complete going full-time. Since lawyers are tasked with writing numerous documents, you will want to study English and perhaps Business Writing in High School. It is also possible that some high schools might have pre-Law classes. Mine did not, but I graduated from high school a very long time ago. Good Luck. Take good care. Mary Ellen Mary Ellen Callaghan

Karla,

It's often recommended that you get your Bachelors in a field you would like to work in should you NOT become a lawyer. That's because law schools aren't really particular as to your major.

That being said, if you are fairly certain you want to go into some sort of law defending business, I'd say major in business. OR, let's say you want to defend companies that manufacture pesticides, or surgical implants, or something like that, you might want to look towards a science-related degree - something that will help you to grasp the technical complexities of the cases you will be dealing with.

Unfortunately in law, you may not end up practicing in your preferred area of expertise, at least not at first. It might take a few years to get there.

Good question!

As a lawyer you have several types of areas to focus, you need to think if you prefer supporting a company with many subjects that they may have to support business needs, if you what to support the community/ government, if you what to support families/ children, if you are more interested at the environmental items. What motivates you can guide you to the best area to focus. Ready about those areas and reflect about what moves you most!
Best luck!

Jerry’s Answer

There's no one specialty. You'll want to develop good communication skills, such as writing and public speaking. If you are considering trial law, debate experience is helpful. Good analytic skills are also key. Depending on the area of interest, it may be helpful to look for a related internship and explore the different areas of law by taking courses in related areas of interest, e.g., anti-trust law, competition law, contract law, investment. If you are focused on working in a Company, then a good business background is also advantageous. If you are planning to go to law school, then preparing for LSAT is often recommended.
